Hong Kong student protesters consider pulling up stakes

HONG KONG Thu Dec 4, 2014 5:50am EST
(Reuters) - One of the main student groups leading pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong said on Thursday it was considering ending more than two months of street demonstrations in the Chinese-controlled city.
The Hong Kong Federation of Students will decide in the next week whether to call on protesters to pull up stakes despite having failed to achieve their goal of ensuring open nominations in the election for the city's next leader in 2017.
"Some people wish to stay until the last minute and we respect that - but we cannot occupy without meaning," federation spokeswoman Yvonne Leung told local radio. "We will decide within the next week whether to stay or retreat."
The federation is one of several groups driving the protests in the former British colony. Some members of another student group, Scholarism, have gone on hunger strike while leaders of the pro-democracy "Occupy Central" movement surrendered to police on Wednesday and called on students to retreat.
Student leaders held talks with Hong Kong officials in late October but failed to break the deadlock after the government said their demand for open nominations was impossible under the laws of the former British colony.
Last month, three student leaders were stopped from boarding a flight to Beijing to take their fight for greater democracy to the Chinese government. Airline authorities said their travel permits were invalid.
Hong Kong returned to Chinese Communist Party rule in 1997 under a "one country, two systems" formula that gives it some autonomy from the mainland and a promise of eventual universal suffrage. Beijing has allowed a free vote in 2017, but insists on screening any candidates for city leader first.
The protests at their peak drew more than 100,000 into the streets but the numbers have now dwindled to just a few hundred.

  1. In my opinion, the Beijing government should not do such an immoral things. They should obey the promise that they have given to the Hong Kong people. Not only do they have to obey but the also cannot play the words game. What had written and ruled is the truth. The Beijing government must listen to what its people said and what they wanted. Also, in my mind, I think that the Beijing government want to use this opportunity to give Taiwanese a warn. "One country, two systems", I remember that it has been proposed to Taiwanese many years ago. According to the history, I consider it is impossible to carry out the plan. Hope that the Hong Kong people can get the right that they have to own.

  2. Since the sun flower event happen in Taiwan, Hong Kong also began to protest for their right to vote for their own candidates. Even though the Beijing government has promised Hong Kong the right to vote, the candidates are still selected by the Beijing government. It shows that the Beijing didn't want Hong Kong get out if their control. They still want to have the right to decide Hong Kong's future. Hong Kong uesd to be call cold blood by the International media, however, this time they united together to show their determination to fight for their right. Since time past, people think differently contrast to the past. People won't stay silent anymore if they feel the right were threatened. Hoping Hong Kong could successfully get back their "real" right to vote!

  3. Today's Hong Kong is tomorrow's Taiwan. After seeing Hong Kong people trying hard to call on the China.I thought the ''one country, two systems'' policy won't be thoroughly carry out.Because the Beijing still wants to own the power to control Hong Kong.I very admire the teenageers in Hong Kong that they have the courage to fight against the government and express their thinking about it.Hope the democracy can really be given in Hong Kong one day
