Pakistan military signs death warrants for six
ISLAMABAD
(Reuters) - The Pakistani military said on Thursday its Chief of Army Staff had signed death warrants for six "hard core terrorists" following a deadly Taliban attack on a school that killed 132 children earlier this week.
It was unclear if the men had been accused of involvement in the school attack or of other crimes. It was also unclear whether they were in custody or had been convicted in absentia.
"COAS today has signed death warrants of 6 hard core terrorists (pending execution) convicted by Field General Court Martial (FGCM), in accordance with law," the military said in an emailed statement.
A military spokesman did not return calls seeking details.
The Pakistan government put an unofficial moratorium on executions in 2008. Since then, only one person has been executed, a soldier convicted by a military court of murdering a fellow officer.
But calls for the swift reinstatement of the death penalty have grown since the attack on a military-run high school in the northwestern city of Peshawar on Tuesday. Nine staff and 132 children were killed.
The Pakistani Taliban said the attack was revenge for a military operation that they said had harmed their own families.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said executions would resume but did not say when. Around 8,000 people are on death row in Pakistan, where the court systems are notoriously slow and unreliable.

It is sad to learn that the Pakistanis killed the innocent students again just for revenge for the army's continuing operation against militants in the North Waziristan tribal area which borders Afghanistan. If people continue to revenge to each other, then the fight between countries will never stop, and the sacrifice will always be the people of the country. I believe as long as we sit down and talk in peace, we can save not only the goods but also thousands of people's lives.
回覆刪除I can't imagine how cold-blood the Taliban is.Poor the students in Pakistan.I think the United Nation should take action to help them and try to think about some practical solution to prevent the terrorist from attacking the innocent people and students. And all the world should pay attention to the terrorist because anyone would have the chance to be the victim.
回覆刪除What a cruel killing action. I am so sorry to know that Taliban took attack on a school. The most terrible thing is that they killed 132 children. Children does nothing and they are innocent. Revenge is the most terrible and useless way to face the difficulty. Maybe they have to think about Taliban and try other ways to handle their problems. As for Taliban, their behavior is nasty. I really don' t know why there are so many attack and terrorist. Why do they do other more meaningful things? If there were peaceful in everywhere, there would not be so much tragedies.
